TORONTO – One person has died and several firefighters have been injured in a blaze in eastern Toronto.

Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell said firefighters arrived at a home in Scarborough Golf Club Road just after 3:30 a.m. on Christmas Day.

He says one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while six firefighters who “fell through the ground” while fighting the flames were checked at a hospital but were later released.

Powell says the extent of the damage and the number of people affected are not yet known.

He says the cause of the fire is under investigation.

In a tweet, Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg called it a “very difficult and tragic fire,” saying he offered his “deepest condolences to family, friends and all who are affected by this terrible fire ”.
