Want to play on the best public golf courses in Pennsylvania? The legacy of legendary architect Pete Dye has you covered. Want to play the best private courses in Keystone State? There are some of the best classic layouts in the country to choose from, but for most of us, good luck getting a start with these ageless beauties.

Dye designed Mystic Rock in Nemacolin, a sprawling resort 90 minutes southeast of the Pittsburgh airport. Mystic Rock opened in 1995 and underwent an extensive renovation in 2021 by longtime Dye associate Tim Liddy. Built on beautifully rolling terrain, Mystic Rock is #1 in the state on Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play list for publicly accessible layouts. It also ranks 10th among all courses owned or operated in conjunction with casinos in the United States.

Nemacolin is also home to Dye-designed Shepherd’s Rock and the state’s #5 public access course.

On the private side, Oakmont Country Club and Merion Golf Club steal much of the show, each having hosted several national championships. But they are not alone as outstanding private clubs in Pennsylvania. Each of the state’s top 20 private courses ranks in the top 150 on Golfweek’s Top Modern or Classic Courses lists, with 1960 being the year that separates these two prestigious lists.

Golfweek’s Best offers numerous lists of course rankings, with that of best public access courses in every state among the most popular. All of the courses on this list allow public access in one way or another, whether it’s standard daily green fees, through a resort, or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there is a will, there is a starting time.

Also popular are the Top Golfweek rankings of the best private courses in every state, and this list of Pennsylvania’s prestigious private offerings is also included below.
