Cameron Smith shared the lead with two holes remaining on his LIV Golf debut but suffered just-to-the-death heartbreak with an errant tee shot that cost him the Boston tournament, won by Dustin Jonson in the playoffs playoffs.

Smith was playing one of the tricks of his life with six birdies, an eagle and zero bogies on the board after 16 holes, putting him tied for the lead at the time with Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood.

The winner of the event pockets 5.9 million Australian dollars.

But Smith fired his tee shot on the penultimate hole in the bushes, forcing him to chip to the side and ultimately make his first bogey of the day to give up the lead.

‘I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M SAYING THIS’: LIV’s ‘borderline chaos’ dealt a blow in the golf war… but problems remain

He needed a birdie on his last hole, a par three, to make a playoff, but he couldn’t drain a long birdie putt, leaving him 14 under, one stroke behind Joaquin Niemann, Johnson, Anirban Lahiri and Westwood.

Westwood then bogeyed on his last hole – his second of the last three holes – to join Smith at under 14 and miss the playoffs.

Johnson also had outright victory at his mercy, but found himself battling for par at 18th-par-five just to make the playoffs.

Nervousness showed among the leaders in the last holes. Lahiri had a short eagle putt to reach 16 under but had to settle for a birdie after burning the edge.

In the playoffs, Johnson drained a long, high-speed eagle putt to beat Niemann and Lahiri on the first hole.

Smith had started the day five shots behind the overnight leader and his new recruit Niemann.

He eventually finished tied for fourth place with Westwood, with the pair pocketing A$1.5 million each.

Meanwhile, the 4 Aces team, including Johnson, Talor Gooch, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez, won the team event.
