Oakmont Country Club head professional Devin Gee shot a 4-under 68 Monday in the first round of the 119th annual West Penn Open at the Nevillewood Club.

Gee had five birdies including three in a row (holes 6-8).

He holds a one-stroke lead over Kevin Shields of Mt. Lebanon and Alec Stopperich of Peters Township, each shooting 3-under 69.

Slippery Rock pro Rob McClellan and Hermitage’s Matt Gurska were tied for fourth at 2-under 70.

Bethel Park fan Brett Young and Peters Township’s Jake Sollon and Connor Schmidt tied for sixth at 1 under.

The 78 field started the day, and two players were forced to withdraw from the 54-hole event.

Barto claims the EDGA title

Matt Barto, from Leechburg, has reached the Erie District Golf Association match play final twice (2019 and 20) and failed.

Barto reached the final for the third time and he was finally able to lift the trophy. He beat Alex Weir, 2 and 1, in the final.

Barto entered the tournament as the third seed.

He beat Mark Noce, 3 and 2, to open match play. He then beat Mike Newcomer, 2 and 1.

In the quarterfinals, he beat Dave Spitzer, 1-up, then he beat No. 2, 4, and 2-ranked Mike Wolfe.

Barto represented Lake View Country Club. He was WPIAL Class 2A champion in 2013 and 2014.

New hobby for Pryor

Terrelle Pryor has a new favorite hobby: golf. The former Jeannette and Ohio State football star teamed with Hempfield teacher and former Mt. Pleasant football coach Bo Ruffner to win the Westmoreland Country Club Invitational on Saturday.

The event used an alternating match-play and best-ball format.

Pryor and Ruffner forced a birdie playoff on the final hole of regulation with Pryor hitting an approach shot 6 feet from 130 yards. Ruffner made the putt to force an extra golf, and the pair picked up the win.

Edgewood CC Wins Tri-State Event

The Edgewood Country Club group of Elmer Bland, Rick Moorhead, Bernadetta Sgro and Jesse Putt took top honors at the Tri-State Section PGA Latrobe Country Club Classic Pro-3 Am.

The group shot a 16-under 127.

The Treesdale Golf and Country Club team of John Brough, Brad Johnston, Jason Rakers and Jeff Mangone finished second. They shot a 15-under 129.

Fuhrer Jr. Invitational next week

The annual Frank Fuhrer Jr. invitation will begin on June 28, minus one key person: Mr. Fuhrer.

Mr. Fuhrer died on May 21.

Also absent from the 40 field is 2021 champion Chase Koepka, who beat Patrick Flavin on the first hole of the playoffs.

Players on the court include TJ Howe, Mark Goetz, Eric Cole, Mike Van Sickle, Dan Obremski and Spencer Mellon.

The tournament begins Monday at the Pittsburgh Field Club.

Westmoreland County Juniors

The Westmoreland County Golf Association Junior Tournament is Thursday at Latrobe Country Club.

The field of 39 includes Nick Turowski of Penn-Trafford, Patrick Bush of Belle Vernon, Nolan Shilling of Franklin Regional and Nixen Erdely of Frazier.

The game starts at 7:50 a.m.
