Here’s a look at some of the recent golf actions involving golfers in the Journal area:

Illinois Women’s Open:

The 36-hole championship for women golfers was held Monday through Tuesday, July 25 and 26 at the Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville. Only four golfers from the Journal region were among the 60 competitors to play the 36 holes. Buffalo Grove native Haeri Lee (73-77 – 150) finished tied for 11th as the top golfer in the finish zone. The Buffalo Grove alum recently completed her senior season at Drake University, where she earned All-Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) honors. Rising Loyola Academy junior Katie Magner (82-81 – 163) finished 37th, while Buffalo Grove 2013 alum Grace Kil (87-77 – 164) tied for 38th. Loyola Academy rising senior Bailey Bitbabo (83-89 – 172) tied for 53rd. Mundelein’s Jaravee Boonchant won the tournament shooting 70-67 – 137, a stellar 7 under par.

Illinois State Mid-Amateur Qualifier:

The 18-hole CDGA event at Palatine Hills Golf Course (par 72) took place on Tuesday, July 26, where the top 22 golfers (the top 15, plus an additional seven due to a tie) qualified for the Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship on August 28. 22-23 at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie. Only two Journal-area golfers qualified out of at least eight who attempted. Ryan Kowalski of Mount Prospect (Prospect HS/Methodist University) finished tied for fifth after shooting even by 72. Steve Sawtell of Northfield, a St. Viator alum in the 1980s, was eighth at 1 on par 73 for also qualify. Nick Albu of Arlington Heights (7 over par 79), Conor O’Grady of Prospect Heights (7 over par 79), Taylor Brinkman of Glenview (9 over par 81), Glenview’s Ryan Skaggs (9 on par 81), Nicholas Pane of Mount Prospect (10 on par 82) and James Trankina of Glenview (11 on par 83). A total of 74 golfers completed the 18-hole course.

Glencoe Move Play Event:

The Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) held its 37th 18-hole members event of the season on Thursday, July 28 at Glencoe Golf Club in Glencoe and Journal area golfers showed great strength. Andrew Southwell (Glencoe/Loyola Academy ’25) shot 5 on par 77 to win the boys 14-15 division. Jack Duffer (Arlington Heights/Rolling Meadows HS) was third at 8 over the par-80 and Jiro Yamat (Niles/Maine East) was fourth at 10 over the par-82. Buffalo Grove native Trenton Kurtz also narrowly missed the top 10, tied for 11th (out of 26 golfers) at 16 over par 88. In the boys 16-18 division, Moises Martinez (Arlington Heights/Hersey) led the way for area golfers to second place at 3 over par 75 Joey Pieracci (Glenview/Loyola Academy) was third at 4 over par 76, while Patrick Rocchio (Winnetka/Loyola Academy) tied for fourth with two others at 6 over par 78. Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Glenview, Park Ridge, and Wheeling also had golfers in the boys 16–18 division who finished between 15th and 32nd. The boy golfers weren’t the only successful ones. Palatine native Keira Brazeau won the girls 14-15 age group at 6 over par 79. Sonam Konanahalli of Glenview was third (13 over par 83) and Lily Zicarelli of Des Plaines (St Viator) finished fifth (18 over par). -by 91). In girls 16-18, Loyola Academy golfers Katie Magner (Winnetka; 7 over par 80) and Gigi Zera (Glenview; 11 over par 84) finished second and third. Glenview’s Olivia Kim was fifth at 18 over par-91 and Wheeling native Charlotte Adler was seventh at 22 over par-95.

Youth Development Program at Heritage Oaks:

While a number of big events are taking place, there are still youth golf events happening in the area as the summer begins to wind down. One of the events was an 18-hole Youth Development Program (YDP) event at Heritage Oaks in Northbrook on Monday August 1st. In the girls 12-13 division, Jennifer March of Arlington Heights won the event with ease, shooting 1 over-par 71 to win by 7 shots. She hit 3 birdies on the back nine. Buffalo Grove’s Ava Alimissis was fourth (12 over par 82) and fellow Buffalo Grove native Samviti Mohanty was eighth (21 over par 91). In boys 12-13, Eli Kim of Glenview was fourth at 11 over par 81 to lead the area golfers. Arlington Heights natives Colin Lockwood and David Lockwood finished sixth with Buffalo Grove’s Andy Gao at 17 over par 87. Arlington Heights’ Nicholas Riley narrowly missed the top 10, finishing tied for 15th at 21 on par 91. In boys 10-11, Nick Ratini of Roselle won with 1 under par 69. Daniel Lulkiewicz of Park Ridge tied for 10th at 27 on par 97 to be the top golfer of the Journal region.

Other golf nuggets:

* At the Al McClean Junior Open on Wednesday, July 27 at the Wilmette Golf Club, three Journal area boys golfers finished in the top five of the boys 14-15 division. Kevin Schuh (Glenview/Glenbrook South) was second at 7 over par 77. Seamus Purcell (Winnetka/Loyola Academy) was tied for third and Antonio Gutierrez (Elk Grove/Conant) fifth. In girls 14-15, Keira Brazeau of Palatine is tied for the win at 10 over the par-80. Sonam Konanahalli of Glenview (3rd), Merritt Bell of Palatine (6th) and Abbey Rieske of Glenview (8th) all finished in the top 10 In boys 16-18, Joey Pieracci (Glenview/Loyola) finished tied for second at 3 over par 73. In girls 16-18, Katie Magner (Winnetka/ Loyola) won the competition at 6 over par. -by 76. Her Loyola teammate Gigi Zera (Glenview) finished fourth with an 83.

* In the players’ challenge at Whitetail Ridge in Yorkville from Wednesday July 27 to Thursday July 28, the top golfer in the area was Chase Blanchard (Glenview/Glenbrook South), who shot 72-70 – 142 to finish second out of 68 golfers. Patrick Raupp (Arlington Heights/Prospect HS) finished ninth and Connor Woodin (Arlington Heights/Buffalo Grove HS) tied for 10th to round out the top golfers in the area. On the girls’ side, Sadie Zorrilla (Elk Grove Village/Conant) was the best golfer in the zone in sixth after shooting 74-83 – 157. Zorrilla was second after the first round, but struggled in the second round.

* At the YDP event on Thursday, July 28 at River Bend in Lisle, Elk Grove native Chase Perez won the Boys Division 8-9 shooting a par-43 6 in the 9-hole competition. In girls 12-13, Madeline Gutierrez of Elk Grove was second at 3 over the par-40.

* At the 9-hole YDP event at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Niles on Friday, July 29, Arlington Heights native David Lockwood tied for the win in the boys’ 12-to-1 age division. 13 at 5-par-38. His brother Colin Lockwood (Arlington Heights) was third at 6-par-39, while Mount Prospect’s Liam Shanahan tied for fourth at 7-par-40. Madeline Gutierrez, Elk Grove native won the girls division 12-13-1 over par-34, easily beating second-placed Lily Wang (7-par-40) of Buffalo Grove.
