GRIMES — Marshalltown High School senior Amber Henson earned another competitive medalist honor and the Bobcat Girls’ Golf finished comfortably in second place at Waukee Invite Monday at Beaver Creek Golf Club.

Marshalltown drew a total of 356 teams to trail only West Des Moines Valley’s 337. Southeast Polk was 10 shots behind the third-place Bobcats with a 366 in the 11-team tournament.

“Beaver Creek took on an inch and a half of water over the weekend and was completely waterlogged,” said MHS head coach Lucas Johnson. “It allowed for tough conditions with shots with no roll in most cases, which made the course extremely long.”

Henson led the pack with his 75 3-over-par round. She shot an impressive 1-under 35 on the first nine holes and finished with a 4-over-40 on her back.

Norah Wilson was Bobcat’s second-highest scorer of the day, shooting a 90 tied for the seventh-highest score of the Invitational. She received a medal for ninth place after cardback tiebreakers.

“Norah Wilson played great golf on the front nine and it was great to see her finish in the top 10,” Johnson said. “She steals the ball low and always tends to play her best on windy days.”

Natalie Henson finished with a 91, good for 12th place, and Brynn Van Buren’s 100 completed the Bobcats scoring rounds.

Autumn Thompson (103) and Gaby Estabrook (104) also competed for MHS.

The Bobcats return to it Tuesday with the CIML Iowa Conference Tournament starting at 9 a.m. at Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk. MHS plays at the Turk Bowman Invite on Thursday at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

“We’re looking forward to the CIML Iowa Conference Tournament at The Legacy, which is a course the girls haven’t seen in competition,” Johnson said. “We were able to run some practice rounds over the weekend and hope to use the knowledge gained to finish strong as we play our final CIML conference tournament.”
