PALM DESERT, Calif. – After the first round of the Wyoming Desert Invitational, the NM State men’s golf team finds itself in 11th place.

A dazzling start from Garrison Smith and Aidan Thomas pushed the Aggies up the standings early on. Smith and Thomas were both tied for first place through the first four holes after shooting two under on the stretch.

Just like Smith and Thomas, Joseph Robson played a really consistent golden first six holes for the Aggies. Robson had pared each of the first five holes before birdieing the par three-sixth.

Between holes nine and eleven, Alvaro Morales found his rhythm and nailed a pair of birdies.

First round

  • In his last ten holes, Aidan Thomas hit in a trio of birdies to finish with a 70 (-2) on the day. Thomas finished the day in the top ten and tied for eighth.
  • On the front nine, Garrison Smith shot a 33 (-3) to help lead the Aggies throughout the day. Smith finished the day tied for 13th after shooting a 71 (-1).
  • After his hot stretch between holes nine and eleven, Alvaro Morales kept rolling with a birdie on fourteen.
  • Joseph Robson shot a par 36 on the back nine to end the day with a 74 (+2).
  • A birdie on the sixth hole was the highlight of the day for Matthew Jackman.
