It could be a chance for someone to get a first PGA Tour win this week when the 2022 John Deere Classic kicks off Thursday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. Five of the last 10 winners have been rookies, including Jordan Spieth in 2013 and Bryson DeChambeau in 2017. Lucas Glover was down 19 under par last year to claim his fourth PGA Tour title by two strokes. It was his first win in just over a decade. The group is one of the weakest this season, with just seven of the world’s top 100 players, led by No. 58 Webb Simpson. The top players are preparing for the Scottish Open next week and the British Open at St. Andrews the following week. Other notable players on the court include Jason Day and three-time John Deere winner Steve Stricker, who just finished second at the US Senior Open.

Caesars Sportsbook rates Simpson as the 10-1 favorite in its latest John Deere Classic 2022 odds. Adam Hadwin is priced at 16-1 and Sahith Theegala, who is trying to rebound after an 18th hole collapse in Travelers, is priced at 22-1. Day is 28-1 while Glover (45-1) and Stricker (65-1) are wide.

Should Theegala be a top pick this week, or will his disastrous ending last week leave anyone in doubt? Would a player like Simpson or Hadwin be a better anchor for your John Deere Classic Fantasy 2022 golf picks? Before you lock in a fantasy golf ranking or place bets on the 2022 John Deere Classic, be sure to check out the fantasy golf projections from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.

Gates is a staff writer for 247Sports and has covered a range of sports for almost five years. He has been following golf closely for much longer and has an in-depth knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the course and in fantasy sports.

Gates has crushed his golf picks all season. Before last week’s Travelers Championship, he was all over Theegala, which was priced at just $7,300 at DraftKings and likely helped many fantasy golf players cash in. The 24-year-old went to the last tee with a one-shot lead over Xander Schauffele, but he carded a double bogey after a disastrous bunker shot, while Schauffle birdied to win by two. Still, Theegala’s performance justified Gates’ confidence and gave a boost to all who chose him.

At the US Open, Gates said Scheffler was well worth the hefty price tag to have him as an anchor for your Fantasy picks, and he was the week’s second-highest Fantasy scorer behind winner Matt Fitzpatrick. At Memorial, five of Gates’ nine picks finished in the top 15, including his biggest dormant pick, Brendan Steele – priced at just $6,600 at DraftKings – who made the top 10!

And at Wells Fargo, four of its top six players finished in the top five, including winner Max Homa, a 40-1 long shot. Anyone who followed Gates is upstairs.

Now Gates has ranked his top golfers for the 2022 John Deere Classic (see tickets on StubHub), and you’ll really want to see what he has to say. You can only see his Fantasy Golf Rankings and John Deere Classic Picks on SportsLine.

2022 John Deere Classic Fantasy Golf Expert Picks

One player Gates is really high on this week is Theegala, and he’s not too concerned about the young player’s state of mind. The California native was a three-time All-American at Pepperdine and garnered attention for most of the season. Now he just needs a first PGA Tour win. It was a brutal way to lose him last week, but Gates thinks Theegala will learn from it and not dwell on it. He has five top-10 finishes this season, including two top-five finishes in his last three events.

On the other hand, Gates fades Hadwin, even though his last outing was a tie for seventh place at the US Open. He had finished in the top 25 once while missing two cuts in his previous six events. And given that he was tied for 71st in the previous major tournament, the PGA Championship, the pundit thinks his performance at the Open was an outlier. The transition from the brutal conditions of Brookline to the very easy trail of Deer Run could also be a bit of an adjustment.
