Los Cabos, Mexico (October 20, 2022) – Several premier resorts in Los Cabos, including eight of the top 10 winners, were recognized for their excellence in Conde Nast Traveler’s 35th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards Poll. Los Cabos has placed more properties – a total of 13 resorts – in the “Top 20 Resorts in Western Mexico” category than any other destination in the region.
“The 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards winners reflect what our audience loves, sticks with, and looks forward to reliving,” the editors said. “Enthusiasm for travel has never been higher, as evidenced by the nearly quarter of a million (our readers) who responded to this year’s survey.”
World-class golf is a prime amenity at many of the reader-selected resorts in Los Cabos. Each golf course, built by a signature designer, fully embraces the dazzling desert and ocean environment of Los Cabos at the tip of the Baja Peninsula.
With an almost perfect score of 98.21, One&Only Palmilla (No. 1), known as the “Grande Dame de Los Cabos”, is an elegant hideaway built in 1956 by the son of a former president of Mexico. Frequented then as now by A-list celebrities, the hotel was transformed by One&Only into a world-class resort in 2004. This lushly landscaped retreat, located on a promontory jutting into the Sea of Cortez, boasts three sheltered coves with sandy beaches and calm waters. Hacienda-style rooms, accented by wrought-iron chandeliers and updated Mission-style furniture, evoke Los Cabos’ colonial-era history. The hotel’s blend of authenticity, elegance, and old-world glamor is unmatched in Los Cabos.
Nestled in a box-shaped canyon surrounded by stony brown peaks, Palmilla Golf Club, located five minutes from the hotel, paved the way for high-end golf in the area when it opened 30 years ago. The original 18 (Arroyo and Mountain nines), the first Jack Nicklaus Signature Design in Latin America, is a firm and fair test that runs along rock-strewn arroyos, long trash bunkers and several ponds. Wide terraced fairways and accessible greens welcome lesser players. The club’s Ocean Nine, later added by Nicklaus, has a 600-foot rise that transports players from the mountains to the sea.
Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Hostel Resorts Collection (No. 2), an elegant and relaxed retreat, is nestled in the cove of Chileno Bay, one of the most beautiful swimming beaches in Los Cabos. Chic and sophisticated, the 92-key resort (60 hotel rooms and 32 multi-bedroom villas) is a fine example of “deformed luxury” and a study of seaside chic: white stucco, sandstone brick, wood natural and hand cut stone walls. and accentuate public spaces. TnT, overlooking the beach, vies for the title of Cabo’s best taco and tequila bar. The resort’s 450-foot-long, three-tiered pool, encrusted with iridescent blue tiles, simulates a river flowing toward the Sea of Cortes.
Resort guests enjoy exclusive access to the Tom Fazio-designed course at Chileno Bay Golf Club. Framed by winding arroyos, hills of flowering shrubs and bunkers filled with brilliant white sand, this brilliant layout is perfectly maintained. Demonstrating his artistry, Fazio has created flowing landforms that simulate rolling ocean waves. Good players are faced with strategic options; average players have plenty of space. Raised tees offer exceptional views of the azure sea and the rugged, mountainous interior. Club comfort stations (Kobe beef burgers, homemade tamales, draft beer, etc.) are a culinary match for the course.
Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas (#12), located on Cape East near Cabo Pulmo, a UNESCO World Heritage National Marine Park, is nestled in a resort community set back two miles of white sand beach on the Sea of Cortes. Surrounded by towering peaks in the Sierra de la Laguna mountains, this sprawling resort invites guests to explore an unknown side of Cabo. The Four Seasons offers a range of dining options, including super fresh seafood at El Puesto, a shaded beachfront cevicheria. There’s also a full-service spa and wellness center, a chic fitness area, multiple pools, a Kids for All Seasons program, and a 250-slide marina.
Wide fairways and firm, fast conditions characterize the breezy course at Costa Palmas Golf Club, which is routed through a rolling “dune landscape” above the sea. The upland holes on this Robert Trent Jones II design feature a grove of mesquite and strategically placed bunkers. Lower links-style holes invite golfers to play bump and run shots along the ground. There’s also a six-hole, par-3 loop and one-acre putting course. Bouchie’s, an outdoor cafe at the practice center, attracts adults and children alike. The golf club is offered exclusively to Four Seasons guests.
Two hotels in Puerto Los Cabos, a 2,000-acre resort and residential community on the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo, have been elected Conde Nast Traveler’s listing. Zadun, a reserve of the Ritz-Carlton (#15), the luxury chain’s upscale product, is spaced along cliffs above a secluded beach on the Sea of Cortes. Spacious, low-rise suites and villas, featuring Mexican textiles and terraces with fire pits, are nestled into a rocky slope thick with cacti. Everything is best in class: the oasis-like Alkemia Spa, the agave-focused Candil Bar, the impeccable and flawless service.
Within this community is also JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa (n°20), a refined post-modern hotel with clean lines and sharp angles posed directly above the sea. It offers five swimming pools, six restaurants (including the famous Café des Artistes), a first-class spa and the Griffin Club, a boutique hotel within a hotel that offers a deeper level of luxury and hospitality.
Both stations are close to Puerto Los Cabos Golf Club, a 27-hole facility with an 18-hole course by Jack Nicklaus; and a nine-hole layout by Greg Norman. The club offers three attractive combinations of 18 holes. Subtly contoured greens, large sculpted bunkers, pronounced elevation changes and spectacular coastal views characterize the golf experience at the club. Complimentary snacks and refreshments are served for two on the course palapas.
