The 13th-ranked Tennessee men’s golf team heads west for a second consecutive tournament this weekend, competing in the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., on the Catalina course at the Tucson National Omni .
The Vols are scheduled to play three rounds in total in Arizona, starting the weekend with 36 holes on Friday, then a final round of 18 holes on Saturday.
According to Golfweek’s college rankings, seven of the 15 teams participating in the national invitational tournament are ranked in the top 25, including six in the top 15.
This weekend marks Tennessee’s third spring tournament. The Vols just finished sixth at Cabo Collegiate where they shot 21 under as a team and Brice Lewis shot 10 under and tied for seventh place. Jacques Hall tied for 29th (-4), while Tyler Johnson tied for 31st (-3).
Tennessee has never played in the Arizona Intercollegiate National Tournament, which is in its 19th year, but is less than a year away from last meeting at Arizona State. The 2021 NCAA Championships were held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, about two hours from Omni Tucson National.
THE RANGE OF FLIGHTS
Tennessee’s leader in overall stroke average this season with a 69.67 rating, Cross has hit 10 rounds of par or better this season and has two top-10 finishes. Cross’s 12 innings as a member of the Vols roster have counted this season.
Lewis was Tennessee’s top finisher in two consecutive tournaments, the most recent shooting under 10 and finishing in a tie for seventh at Cabo Collegiate. Lewis leads the Vols in spring stroke average with a mark of 67.17 and has gone six straight rounds under 70.
Johnson has shot 10 of 12 rounds or better this season with a pair of top 10s. The redshirt senior finished tied for 31st in consecutive tournaments and posted a 69.83 stroke average this spring.
Wolcott joins the Tennessee roster for the second straight tournament. The two-time All-SEC selection has 21 career top-25 finishes.
In 18 total rounds as a member of the Tennessee roster or competing as an individual, Hall shot 15 times par or better. The Knoxville native is coming off the second-best finisher in Tennessee at Cabo Collegiate, where he shot 4 under and finished tied for 29th. Hall has four top-30 finishes this season and a 69.83 stroke average this spring.
THE INDIVIDUAL OF THEFT
The Longueuil, Que., native has appeared in two tournaments as a Vol, most recently as a member of the Tennessee roster at the Puerto Rico Classic last month. Desmarchais shot 4 under the tournament, finishing tied for 50th.
