LA QUINTA, Calif. — The San Diego State men’s golf team finished tied at four for 13th out of 24 teams at the Prestige on Wednesday. The Aztecs, who are ranked 44th in the latest Golfstat rankings, shot 13 of 297 in today’s final round and finished 47 of 899 overall at the 7,100-yard, par-71 Greg Norman course at PGA WEST.
SDSU tied with No. 5 Pepperdine, Colorado State and North Texas, two shots behind No. 25 LSU and host UC Davis, who were 11th at 45 of 897. Vanderbilt shot an impressive 14 under 270 today to finish at 16 of 868, 10 strokes ahead of No. 48 Oregon (+26). No. 14 Kansas (+29) and No. 7 Texas Tech (+33) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand) tied for 16th out of 120 entrants to lead San Diego State to 8 of 221 after a 2 of 73 on Wednesday. Starting on the seventh hole, Anupansuebsai bogeyed the 181-yard par-3 hole before bouncing back with a birdie on the 566-yard par-5 12th. His only other blemish on the day was a double bogey on the 18th par 4, 461 yards when he scored 15 pars.
Shea Lagoon (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) recovered from a 9 of 80 on Tuesday with a par 71 today, moving up 30 spots to finish tied for 45th. Lague sank birdies on the par-4, 431-yard 15th, par-5, 537-yard 16th and par-3, 180-yard 17th to start his first nine 33, but he doubled the par-4, 470-yard second and bogey the par-4, 380-yard fifth to sign for a 71.
Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) finished tied for 59th after a second straight 77. Jin was tied on 11 holes with birdies on par-4, 359 yards ninth and No. 17, and two bogeys, but went 6-over for his final seven holes.
Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) shot a second straight 8 of 79 and tied for 68th at +16. Sugimoto was unable to birdie that day, instead recording three bogeys, a double bogey on the par-4, 10th from 415 yards and a triple bogey on the No. 17.
Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) tied for 110th at +24 after 5 of 76 today. Guezzale had a pair of birdies – the No. 15 and the par-4, 477-yard third – but those were offset by four bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-3, 216-yard 13th.
Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg held on to his 36-hole lead with a 1-under 70 to finish 3-under 210, two shots ahead of Oregon State’s Carson Barry (-1). Aberg and Barry were the only two golfers in the field of 120 players who were not over par.
Two other SDSU golfers – Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas) – Completed his third round as an individual in The Prestige Individual Invitational at Coral Mountain Golf Club for 7,145 yards and par 72. Hastings shot a 1 of 73 and finished tied for 28th on Golfer’s 62 at 9-of-225, while Ngo’s even-par 72 saw him finish tied for 37th at 12-of-228. Pepperdine’s Ian Maspat led wire-to-wire and posted a 4-under 68 today today to finish 6-under 210.
The Aztecs will co-host the Lamkin Invitational at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif., March 7-8.
