Paul E. Ralston, Sr. passed away on July 15, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 25, 1941 in Conway, MA to Hugh and Ethel Ralston. He was predeceased by his brother Gérald.
Paul graduated from Frontier High School and earned a BSEd. from Fitchburg State University, M.Ed from UMASS Amherst, and CAGS from the University of Vermont, and was a founding member of the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Honor Society. Paul enjoyed getting together with other alumni, especially with his Mohawk Brotherhood Brothers from Fitchburg State.
Mr. Ralston was passionate about his work as a principal in VT, NH and MA. Paul initiated several building and playground projects, and he established a Fitchburg State University satellite campus for educators in Chatham, MA. He was a past president of the Cape and Islands Principal’s Association. Paul overcame many adversities in his life and was a strong advocate for children in public education. Paul was a Florida State Guardian Ad Litem volunteer, and as principal, Paul enjoyed visiting classrooms to read to students and teach beekeeping lessons. Paul retired in 2000 as Principal of Chatham Primary School.
Paul was active in many communities across New England. He has coached baseball and golf teams, run charity campaigns, and served as city selector in Lunenburg, MA, where he and Joanne raised their three children.
Grandpa had a special bond with each of his six grandchildren. He shared his love of Cape Cod with everyone; and each grandchild caught their first fish on “Grampy’s Pond” in Harwich. Grampy enjoyed fishing trips, clam-fishing adventures, and attending his grandchildren’s various sporting events and concerts over the years.
Paul was an avid golfer, outdoorsman and gardener. He enjoyed golfing with many friends, including the Friday Golf Association (FGA), his wife, son and grandchildren. In 2014, Paul fulfilled his life’s dream by scoring his first hole in one while playing with his son Paul and grandson Nate in Derry, NH. He followed that 30 days later and celebrated his second hole-in-one on his return to his winter home course in The Villages, Florida, where Joanne and Paul enjoyed great friendships.
Paul’s family meant the world to him, and he was very proud of each one of them. Paul is survived by his wife Joanne (Ciborowski) Ralston of 57, son, Paul Jr., wife Karen of East Hampstead, NH; daughters Pamela Sirois, husband Jessy of Wilbraham, MA; and Shannon Crowell, husband Cary of Alpine, California; grandsons Andrew, Michael and Nate Ralston, Jake and Joseph Crowell and granddaughter Ava Sirois; sisters-in-law Helen Kittredge, MaryEllen Perry, Monica Britto and brother-in-law Mic Ciborowski, wife Barbara and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, 9/18/22 at the Bull Run Restaurant in Shirley, MA from 1-4 p.m. Friends and acquaintances are invited to stop by to share a memory or pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul’s name to the Dementia Society of America (dementiasociety.org) or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
