CEDAR TOWN — Pine View High School’s women’s golf team repeated as area champions on Wednesday, winning the final game of the regular season at Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Cedar City.

The Panthers, led by Hallie Wieland’s 85, posted a team score of 359, edging second-placed Desert Hills, who finished with 363.

Desert Hills also finished in second place overall for the season. The Thunder were tied with Dixie in team points, but won second place due to a lower average score. Individually, top medalist honors went to Dixie senior Annabelle Millard, who won all eight regional games this season.

Pine View head coach Matt Wieland said it’s the first time he’s seen the same golfer “run the table” and win every game in a season.

Millard finished the season with a remarkable 18-hole average of 73.7 strokes. Pine View’s Alyssa Butterfus came in second place individually, averaging 82.1.

In winning the tag team trophy, the Panthers finished with a weekly average of 354.4 shots, while runner-up Desert Hills had 371.4 and third-placed Dixie had 372.9.

“It’s great to repeat as area champions,” Wieland told St. George News afterwards. “It’s hard to go back and forth in any sport, so I’m really proud of my girls and the work they’ve put in.”

Pine View finished with five golfers among the top 12 finalists in the region.

“Anique Shirts had the best of her career today to pass a few girls and get in there,” Wieland said. “It’s super exciting and gives us all a boost of confidence heading into the state tournament.”

Wieland noted that the season had its ups and downs. One of the main challenges, he said, was a change in the structure of weekly tournament pairs.

“It made it very difficult for the coaches to coach the girls effectively,” he said. “I think the scores for the whole region suffered a bit. Ours certainly did.

The state tournament is scheduled for May 11-12 at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, the same course that hosted Region 10. Game of week 7 April 20. Pine View will be looking to repeat as the state champion, while Millard will be looking to defend her individual state title.

This past weekend, Millard teamed up with Herriman High School senior Millie Terrion to win the Utah Golf Association Women’s Spring Open, which was also held at Sunbrook. Both Millard and Terrion signed to play collegiately for Utah Valley University starting this fall.
