On Sunday, a pair of Chautauqua County student/athletes competed in the first round of their respective New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf championship.

Westfield senior Darien Swanson shot a 10 of 82 and found himself tied at four for 57th in a field of 99 in the boys’ tournament at the Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

Representing the Section VI team, Swanson shot a 4 of 40 on the front 9 and a 6 of 42 on the back 9. In all, he recorded a birdie, six bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey on the 6,861-yard layout.

Section VIII senior Thomas Finn leads the pack after shooting a 6-under 66, giving him a three-shot lead over Section VIII senior CJ Merritt and Section IX second Oliver Watson.

Swanson will leave for the second round today at 9:18 a.m.

Meanwhile, Southwestern senior Josephine Corey shot a 24 of 96 to tie her for 64th at McGregor Links Country Club in Wilton.

Kennedy Swedick leads the pack with a par of 72, one shot ahead of Nina Choe and two ahead of Sofia Nogalo.
