SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN, Ariz. –The Ole Miss Women’s Golf Team opened its spring season Sunday afternoon at Rapsodo in the Desert in Superstition Mountain, Arizona. The Rebels ended the first day of the tournament in fifth place after earning a team score of 289 (+1).
The Rebels recorded a total of 15 birdies on day one at the Lost Gold Golf Course, taking on four other teams in Golfstat’s Top 25 Collegiate Team Rankings. Ole Miss also finished five under the par-5 score, third best among the field.
The juniors paved the way for the Rebels in the opening tournament of the new year Chiara Tamburlini. Tamburlini staged a blistering start to open his inning, tallying five birdies in the front nine to climb to the top of the standings halfway through the day. The St. Gallen, Switzerland native closed out her round with a shot down the back nine, ending her day tied for third, recording a 68 (-4) for her effort.
Also finishing his day below par for Ole Miss was Andrea Lignell, whose performance of five birdies on Sunday tied her for 10th behind a 71 (-1). While a late double bogey on the 17th hole dropped Lignell down the leaderboard, the Swedish national’s front nine helped maintain her place in the top 10 heading into Monday.
Tamburlini and Lignell’s five birdies tied them each for second in the field in total birdies, while Tamburlini ended the field’s first day with a par-4 (-3).
Starts his spring 2022 season with a 74 (+2), senior Julia Johnson finished his day counting a pair of bogeys, while scoring par on the remaining 16 holes, tying for the most pars by an individual on the day. Johnson will now enter day two of competition tied for 24th, looking to move up the standings over Monday’s 36 holes of play.
Senior Ellen Hume finished her first round with a total of three birdies, as the Whitwell, England native shot a 76 (+4) to open her spring campaign tied for 33rd. Rounding out the game for the Rebels was a freshman in a red shirt McKinley Cunninghamwho finished the day tied for 38th after shooting a 78 (+6).
Compete as an individual, freshman Natacha Host Husted finished her first round of the spring with a 75 (+3), tying her for 30th place.
Arizona State is currently in the lead heading into the final day of competition, with the Sun Devils shooting a 278 (-10) as a team to take an early lead.
The Rebels will tee off tomorrow morning, playing 36 holes to wrap up play in Arizona. Tee times are currently scheduled for 10:00 a.m. CT at Lost Gold Golf Course, with the third round to follow immediately after the conclusion of the second.
