TaylorMade Kalea Premier Women’s Golf Set Review

With more women playing golf than ever before, it’s exciting to see manufacturers innovating to help improve the range of clubs available to women golfers. The TaylorMade Kalea Premier range represents an exciting addition to the women’s golf equipment market, designed to be customized to complement female golfers’ physical attributes and enhance their performance from tee to green.

Having tested these clubs at Marco Simone Golf Club in Italy, home of the 2023 Ryder Cup, we can certainly guarantee these are some of the best golf clubs for women on the market. But it’s also clear that TaylorMade has gone the extra mile in designing this 11-piece club set with input from a female advisory board, set up specifically to help the brand develop premium golf clubs that can help female golfers play better.

Now, it should be noted that TaylorMade sells this set slightly differently depending on where in the world you are. In the US you can buy the complete set as a package, while in Europe you’ll need to buy each of the clubs and the bag separately – you can click through to read our individual reviews of these products below.

Aesthetically, Taylormade has retained a sleek and refined design in this club set, which is similar to the color schemes of the older Kalea 3. (opens in a new tab) model. Shades of dark blue and teal contrast well with the shiny stainless steel clubheads of the Kalea irons and putter. Meanwhile, the driver (opens in a new tab) and the fairway woods draw much inspiration from TaylorMade’s SIM2 driver and feature a lightweight carbon fiber crown that exudes class.

It’s safe to say you’ll look the part as you take to the course with the Kalea Premier set. But you’ll also reap the performance benefits, as these clubs offer exceptional distance and control on your longer shots. And that’s why the pilot is perhaps the main event here. It is a lightweight offering weighing 10g less than its predecessor, the Kalea 3 driver, and comes standard with a loft of 12.5º. It offers excellent forgiveness, which prevents misses from deviating too much from their trajectory. From the moment I picked it up I loved it because the lightweight feel and weight balance are just right, and I found it easy to swing with no effort. Some better players with faster swingers may get along better with the female Stealth HD driver, but the Kalea Premier should suit the majority of female golfers.

Speaking of forgiveness, we were wowed by the reprieve of the Kalea Premier fairway woods (opens in a new tab) Free. Their clubheads are 37% larger than the original Kalea 3 range, which might explain why we felt these clubs hit the ground and off the tee very consistently. Well-hit shots were rewarded with impressive distances, but what’s most telling is that even our poorly-hit shots stayed comfortably in play and traveled considerable distances. The desirable rainbow-shaped ball flight ensures the ball lands softly with the same control you expect from a long iron. It’s pretty handy too. They come in three loft choices (3, 5, and 7 wood) so you can fill any fairway wood slot in the bag.

You will see similar benefits in Kalea Premier hybrids (opens in a new tab), which can be mixed and matched to provide a forgiving alternative to your long irons. The V-shaped steel sole was designed to slide, not dig, reducing friction with the turf so you find it really easy to hit. It’s also very handy out of the rough and I’ve even enjoyed using it from shallow fairway bunkers. Also, my shots seemed to have a high ball flight and soft landing, which is ideal for a hybrid. This Rescue is available in 4, 5, 6 and 7 loft options.

Once back on the fairway, you can enjoy the Kalea Premier irons (opens in a new tab), which deliver a real punch to the clubface and we found ourselves hitting the Kalea Premier 8-iron about the same distance as we hit our standard 7-iron. They feel pretty firm, but that being said I found it relatively easy to manipulate punches and be more creative, hitting little low punches in the wind and even draws and fades soft.

We were thrilled to see the Kalea Premier Spider Mini Putter (opens in a new tab) included in this range because it really adds to the quality of an already top of the line women’s golf set. The Spider franchise is one of the most renowned in golf, but this model is specifically designed for female golfers with a 15% reduction in its footprint compared to the standard Spider putter. It also has a specially designed graphite shaft that weighs just 70g, which helps with the pace and timing of your run. Additionally, the deep grooves on the putter face provided a real reassuring, early roll that helped putts stay in line.
