GLADEWATER – Tempest Golf Club, the award-winning East Texas Jeffrey Brauer Championship course, recently earned two more accolades when it was named the 18th Best Course in Texas You Can Play by Golf Digest and the #1 Dallas-Fort Worth Edge Course by Avid Golfer Magazine in its annual survey.

The Golf Digest ranking was the highest on record for the semi-private gem in Piney Woods, which was completely renovated by Brauer in 2018.

“We are certainly thrilled and honored to have a national publication such as Golf Digest recognize our course as one of the top 20 in the state among hundreds of public courses in Texas,” said Randy Wade, Golf Manager of Tempest.

“It is certainly a tribute to our hard-working staff, especially Brauer’s scenic creativity and our excellent course superintendent Stephen Killingsworth.”

Golf Digest raves about the newly renovated course open to guests, members and local players.

“A major transformation has transformed the former site of Southern Hills Golf Club into a new semi-private, publicly accessible East Texas course,” Golf Digest magazine said. “Architect Jeff Brauer kept the same course corridors, carved from towering pine trees on gently rolling terrain, but rebuilt uniquely shaped green complexes.”

It was the second time; Tempest Golf Club has been rated as the #1 Peripheral Course by an avid golfer for a Dallas-Fort Worth golf road trip.

“Located in Gladewater, two hours east of DFW, Tempest Golf Club is a course you should definitely consider. One of the most dynamic layouts in the state, the rolling undulations and elevation changes make this course unlike anything you’ll find in DFW,” said Avid Golfer’s story in its November issue. .

“It’s certainly gratifying when outside sources have recognized our great journey and the opportunity for everyone to play it, but we have the resources and the dedication to keep improving until we’re No. in Texas,” Wade added.

In addition to its par-72 championship golf course, which has hosted several major amateur and college tournaments, Tempest offers extensive practice facilities with a driving range and several large practice greens, overseen by its iconic clock tower . Plus, a modern dining and meeting pavilion.

There are living and playing chalets adjacent to the driving range and front nine with more expected to be built in the near future as well as impressive real estate offerings.

“Neptune’s Grill and Bar has plenty of TV’s with drinks to quench your thirst before you make the short drive to the Metroplex. We can’t recommend this one enough.” said Avid Golfer, Texas’ largest golf magazine.
