Texas Tech begins construction of driving range for college golf programs

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech Athletics announced Thursday the construction of a new 10-acre driving range on the Rawls Course exclusively for the college’s men’s and women’s golf programs.

The lineup is expected to be completed this spring and cost around $ 1.3 million over nationally recognized Rawls, according to a press release.

“There is no better on-campus course in the country that offers a more challenging setup with key development areas for its student-athletes than the Rawls course,” said athletics director Kirby Hocutt.

The men’s and women’s teams are currently ranked in the Top 25 in their respective polls for this season. The Rawls Course was named the third best public course in Texas, the fifth best on-campus course in the country, and the best of the Big 12 Conference by Golf Week Magazine.

“Superb facilities are the driving force behind successful programs,” said male head coach Greg Sands, recently inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. “This refurbishment of the practice offers our players what will be one of the best practice areas in the country to work on their long game. The recruits will have no doubt that between our short playing area and our practice, the opportunities to improve here are endless. From recruiting to development, this project will help Texas Tech Golf reach new heights. “

“We are very excited about our practice project,” said female head coach JoJo Robertson. “We already have one of the best golf courses and training facilities in the country, and this renovation will take us to the next level. We are extremely grateful to Regent Dusty Womble and those who helped make this project possible.
