After finishing second twice last season, the University of North Florida junior Robbie Higgins finally has a college championship.

Higgins posted college lows for 18 and 54 holes earlier this week and won the Windon Memorial Classic at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill., at 6-under par 204. He opened with a 67, posted a 65 at second round and won outright.

It was his sixth top 10 and his 13th top 25. Higgins became the 23rd individual winner in UNF, a group that produced 37 titles. UNF finished fourth as a team, behind Northwestern, Kent and Arkansas-Little Rock, its second fourth-place finish in two events this fall.

Senior Cody Carroll tied for 24th at 4 over, posting his best third-round score with a 70. It was Carroll’s 25th top 25 for the Ospreys.

Nick Gabrelcik, the two-time ASUN Player of the Year, tied for 33rd at 6-over. His 12 birdies were the second birdies in the tournament after Higgins (13).

Hopkins wins the Florida Cup

Devon Hopkins of Atlantic Beach was selected to play for Team North in the 14th Florida Cup, Oct. 16-18 at Kensington Golf and Country Club in Naples.

The two teams of 16 players will compete in a Ryder Cup format. North Florida holds a 7-6 series lead and has won the last two.

Hopkins, whose home course is Jacksonville Beach Golf Club, was 1-1-1 in the 2020 Florida Cup. He was the 2019 FSGA Amateur and Mid-Amateur of the Year.

Set of post-season sites

Marsh Landing, Hidden Hills, Fernandina Beach, Fleming Island and St. Johns Golf and Country Club will host post-season high school golf tournaments.

Marsh Landing will be the site of the Region 1-1A Men’s Tournament on October 31st.

Hidden Hills will host the District 4-1A boys and girls tournaments on October 24. Fernandina Beach is the site of the District 3-2A boys’ and girls’ tournaments, also on October 24.

St. Johns will host the District 3-3A Women’s Tournament on October 24 and Fleming Island will host the 3-3A Men’s Tournament on October 26.

More low marks

Area high school golfers have been playing at a high level for most of the season.

At the Fletcher Invitational at the Atlantic Beach Country Club, the top 11 players tied the par of 71 or better, led by Camden Smith (67) from Ponte Vedra High, Miles Russell (68) of Providence and Cody Tucker (68) of Bishop Kenny.

Jackson Runquist (69) from Fletcher, Brock Blais (70) from Ponte Vedra and Aubrey Scholars (70) of Episcopal beat par. Ponte Vedra won the team title at 5-under 284, with Fleming Island (293) and Bolles (294) following.

Earlier this week, the Fleming Island men’s team shot a school record 136 at Fleming Island Golf Club to beat Bartram Trail by 22 shots. Tyler Mawhiney tied the nine-hole school record with a 32 and Dylan Frien added a 33 and Jaylen Abbas a 34.

Bruce Moskovciak of Ponte Vedra Beach shot 5-for-149 at Lakewood Ranch Golf Club to finish third in the Florida State Golf Association Men’s Net Championship 70-plus division. … Jackson Runquist of Atlantic Beach shot 76 in the boys 13-15 division to place seventh at the Florida Junior Tour Okeeheelee Open in West Palm Beach. Reid Carpenter from Ponte Vedra Beach (83) finished sixth in the boys division 11-12 and Danielle Dailey of St. Augustine (75) tied for sixth in the girls 13-15 division.
