CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – It was the final hole and final pairing of both games on the final day of the 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Championships at Dalhousie Golf Club as the University of Tennessee at Martin hit a pair of 3-2 decisions for its second consecutive league. Title.
The Skyhawks’ fifth tournament win of the season didn’t come easy, but like all season, UT Martin relied on depth. Each of the five members of the Skyhawk roster picked up a win over both games today.
That said, it was senior clutch play Tate Chumley who helped carry UT Martin across the finish line. After being crowned an OVC All-Tournament selection on Tuesday, Chumley saved his best for today. With the semifinal game against Morehead State even at 2 all, the native of Murfreesboro, Tenn. produced back-to-back birdies to wrap up the round, passing 2022 OVC Championships medalist Joe Muschong in an instant classic to dispatch the Skyhawks. in the championship showdown against top seed Tennessee Tech.
The title match was again tied at 2-2 as Chumley held off a fierce rally from Nick Sutton. Chumley was 3-up over 14 holes but Sutton fought back to win the No. 16 and No. 17 holes, applying pressure on the UT senior Martin. With a possible playoff looming, Chumley calmly smoked a perfect drive down the middle of the fairway and hit the green in two shots on the 523-yard par-5 hole. After Sutton chipped 20 yards from the green, Chumley needed a three-putt to clinch the Skyhawks title. He rolled his second putt within a foot of the cup and the hole was conceded, giving UT Martin its third OVC Golf Championship in school history (also winning in 2016 and 2021).
“We knew these would be two tough teams we would face today – it was an all day battle,” said Skyhawk’s second-year head coach. Austin Swafford mentioned. “I’m so proud of our guys – they played every hole for 36 holes after a long week of stroke play. For Tate to come out and play like he did today in both games – not just for him -even but for the team – it was so special to watch and be a part of it Our message all year has been to play for each other – play for UT Martin – and whatever else you want to accomplish as an individual will take care of himself. I can’t put that feeling into words.”
Against No. 3 seed Morehead State, Jacob Uehlein produced the most imposing victory – beating its counterpart by a margin of 4&3. Garrett Chumley also added a 1-up victory before At Tate Chumley The 1-up thriller brought the Skyhawks one step closer to a conference championship.
UT Martin then capped off its successful week with the triumph over Tennessee Tech, which had won the 54-hole stroke play portion of the event by five strokes. Bryson Morel and Jonathan Xonis each had 5 and 4 considerable victories before Tate Chumley sealed the victory on the last hole.
NCAA Regionals May 16-18 are next for the Skyhawks, who will be assigned to one of six locations: Bryan, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; New Haven, Connecticut; Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; Stockton, California or Tuscaloosa, Ala.
