KETTERING, Ohio — The US Senior Women’s Open is underway in Kettering, but it’s not happening overnight.

Thanks to more than 400 volunteers, mostly local from the NCR Country Club, the Women’s Open can come together.

Cleaning golf balls is a chore not everyone wants to do, but for Phil Baker, it’s normal. Baker, co-chair of the tournament’s practice areas committee, is also a member of the NCR Country Club.

“We are so proud of the NCR Country Club and the amenities we have and our members have come out in force to volunteer,” Baker said. “It was superb.”

Nearly 250 of the volunteers are club members, many of whom are eager to help even more.

“There are people who have signed up for maybe three or two shifts, four hour shifts,” Baker said. “And they say, ‘Hey, call me if you need me’ or ‘Can I stay some more? “”

For Baker, he shines a light on every moment and is happy to show the club between functions.

“We’re so proud of our club and the ladies will come and say ‘wow, that’s a golf course!'” Baker said.

Slim Morgan, co-president of Baker, brings clean range balls to golfers.

Morgan makes sure everything is ready for the next female golfer to practice. He says volunteering at the tournament was an easy decision.

“It’s my way of giving back,” Morgan said. “I love golf and that’s a good way to look at it. But it’s more about giving back and helping a good organization.

Morgan said he arrived at 6:15 a.m. and left around 7:30 p.m.

He, Baker and all the other volunteers are just happy to be here.

“I’m tired, but I’m enjoying it,” Morgan said.
