CRYSTAL FALLS — Wawonowin Country Club in Champion’s Scott Saari narrowly missed his third Upper Peninsula Golf Association senior men’s tournament title Tuesday at Young’s Golf Course located between Iron River and Crystal Falls.

Saari, who won that title in 2018 at Marquette Golf Club and in 2021 at North Shore Golf Club near Menominee, finished one stroke behind champion Joe Quinn at Gladstone Golf Club.

Saari shot rounds 75 on Monday and 77 on Tuesday for 152, tied for second just behind Quinn, who had 75 and 76 for 151.

Saari equalized Gladstone GC’s Larry Bratonia, who held rounds of 76-76–152.

Saari came back from a 42 on his front nine in the second round on Tuesday, racking up 35 on the back nine to come as close as he did to the title.

Jeff McCall of Escanaba Country Club with 79-74-153 was fourth, another shot behind Saari and Bratonia, while in fifth was Mark Ray of Highland Golf Club near Escanaba with 79-76-155. McCall’s 74 was the fastest round Tuesday among the dozen golfers in the championship flight.

Another Marquette County golfer participated, according to Young’s officials. Steve Swentik of Marquette Golf Club qualified for the first flight as there were 11 flights in addition to the championship flight. He shot 82-96-178 to place 11th in the steal and had missed qualifying for the championship steal by just two shots.
